Overview
Where history meets the sea.
Zanzibar is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, made up of many islands, with Unguja being the main island and the one most visitors simply call Zanzibar. Located off the coast of mainland Tanzania, the islands have been shaped for centuries by Indian Ocean trade between Africa, Arabia, India and Europe.
At the heart of Unguja is Stone Town, a historic Swahili trading city recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its narrow streets, carved doors and historic buildings reflect a unique blend of African, Arab, Indian and European influences developed over more than a millennium.
Beyond its history, Zanzibar is a tropical escape of white-sand beaches, warm Indian Ocean waters, coral reefs and rich marine life. From exploring Stone Town and spice farms to snorkelling, diving and relaxing by the sea, Zanzibar brings culture, nature and island life into one unforgettable destination.
